May 30th, 2004, Sears Point in Sonoma County.
I started out the day in fine style, This is me in the Open Twins race, currently in second place, so this was probably the first or second lap

But in my second race of the day, I stalled on the starting line, and someone from further back on the grid didn't see me stationary on the grid with my hand in the air. As a result they piled into the rear of my right leg, and caused the damage below.
This is not actually my ankle, but my ankle X rays looked very similar. Though my ankle didn't have the piece broken off on the side.

This is a normal ankle

This is roughly what my ankle looked like

A week later, some buddies came by to fire up the BBQ, cook some animal, drink some beer and tell stories.
This is Mike Krynoc and I enjoying the afternoon sun.

Then I went to see the Dr again, and get a look at his handiwork. I'll rebuild this page soon, but here are the raw pictures. You can count, you add up the screws and staples. Remember, I'm 6'2" tall, that's a long leg, and a lot of meat between the staples and my fibula plate. These are big pictures, I'll scale them down soon.
No wonder I feel like a "fillet O fish"
